Building Job Skills

posted January 2021

Live Oak Public Libraries offers free public computer and Wi-Fi use to all.  The library also has resources for job skills, resume building, and tech assistance.  Over the past year, library users have been able to access the information and services they need to succeed.

An Islands Library patron was to able use library computers to study, take, and ace her final exam in medical coding. A customer at Garden City Library was not only able to apply for a job using library computers, but was also interviewed and hired.  She was excited to tell library staff about her first day working for a local hospital system.

Libraries also improve digital literacy through instructional support.  At Garden City Library, another patron came in to request help with her laptop.  Staff gave her some tech tutorials on how to access her library account online, search the catalog, and place holds.  She was pleased to learn how to do this on her own.  The patron said she had lost her job during the COVID shutdown and that the library has been a wonderful resource.
